Unite Humanity

APRIL 2, 2020

During these unprecedented times, I hope we are thinking about the big picture of uniting humanity. It all starts with our Faith, our Families (and Friends), and our work. Lots to deal with on all three levels.

I read an article the other day on the seven moral rules that unite humanity. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your personal perspective, it takes a major crisis like the COVID-19 virus to bring us all together. (Just what God had in mind) Don’t blame God for this virus. There have been plenty of other crises in the world that are all man made.

Let’s get a little more positive. Researchers have studied morality around the world and how it does or doesn’t vary worldwide. Morality is meant to promote cooperation. People everywhere face a similar set of social problems, and use a similar set of moral rules to solve them. It is pointed out that “Everyone everywhere shares a common moral code. All agree that cooperating, promoting the common good, is the right thing to do.” I couldn’t agree more.

The universal rules of morality are:

  • Help your family. You decide for yourself if this might be a time to bring your family closer together in order to help each other. Giving and Forgiveness come to mind.
  • Help your group. Most of us have places where we worship. Are you a close part of that group? If not, they need you and you need them. Also, your work partners need you to reach out to them just to show them that you care about them.
  • Return Favors. Being a mentor or mentee to someone can help you understand that you are not alone in this world. They are there for you if you choose.
  • Be brave. Courage is needed more than ever now. We all need to fight together and remain strong during this pandemic. Be a leader and do your part.
  • Defer to superiors. This is a tough one for some people today because leadership is so important in guiding our organizations, our city, our State and our Country through this pandemic. Pray for them even though you may not agree with them. They need your support more than ever right now. We can sort out the bad leaders after we get through this problem.
  • Divide resources fairly. This is not welfare. This is merely doing the right thing in sharing resources during a battle.
  • Respect others’ property. You don’t have to have all of the toilet paper for yourself. Leave some for others. Remember, food was rationed in World War II. Do your part.

Just some friendly little reminders as to what we can all think about during these tough times. We are all in this together so learn to share appropriately and think of others more than yourself. Most of you will be just fine. Teach others that they are valuable and guide them to do the right thing. There is plenty of love out there in this world so this is a good time to learn to share that love. Do you part in cooperating and promoting the common good.
