The 7 Intangibles in Life that Cannot Be Bought

MARCH 25, 2022

RETURN ON LIFE

As brother Randy and I continue our work with our Band of Brothers, we are constantly challenging each other to read and re-read many great books available to all of us. We just happen to be into those self-help books that have to do with our Faith; our Families; and, now that we are both retired, our respective careers in education and business. There are so many great books to read that it has been difficult to narrow down all that we are available. (“So much to learn and too little time” or from Ms. Teri’s German Heritage; “Too soon old and too late smart”)

Randy recently re-discovered an old book he had read in the past, that prompted him to reflect on the thought of moving from ROI (Return on Investment) to ROL. (Return on Life). An interesting perspective if you look at it from the educational side which is difficult to measure the impact on students, as opposed to the business side which has constant financial measurements. While our Foundational Band of Brothers represents the 32-40 age group, (their Go-Go years), most of them are thinking about how to maximize their ROI (which is understandable) but may need to be focusing more on their ROL. By the way, how well are YOU doing in your own season of life, with the resources you have been given to date? (What is YOUR ROL?)  What is it that you dream about or look forward to in life? Who are you? Are you on the right path? Who are you taking with you? And, Do you have an end game? (Our four major questions with our upcoming Band of Brothers’ Personal Workbook)

Brother Randy’s recycled book is titled “The New Retirementality” by Mitch Anthony. He discusses the 7 intangibles in life that cannot be bought. (By any amount of money) They include: Happiness, Fulfilment, Balance, Satisfaction, Security, Significance, and Success.  We want all of our Foundational Band of Brothers to be successful (as they each define it for themselves). But we feel it is more important for us to remind them, that, while money is important in life, it is not the most important thing. How you live your life on purpose and impact the lives of others is more important. (Go figure it out with your mentor or your own brother)

If interested, follow us at elevatorguy.net as we unpack these important factors in helping us to understand the preparations needed to lead a good life, in spite of life’s curveballs, by recognizing our own “Return on Life.”
