For many of us, the truth is that we call dogs our BEST friends because, in most of the ways that matter, they are. Through the ages, people have claimed dogs as one of their closest and best companions. I am all in for the unique relationships we have with our dogs as yours truly has enjoyed and learned from them throughout my entire life. My daughter Tory just happens to have five dogs. (in addition to three cats and three goats) It is so rewarding to see the deep relationships of loyalty, kindness, understanding, and an indomitable spirit between and among my kids and grandkids, as they attend to their animals. Dogs are often the ONLY companion some people have, so, as you read and re-read today’s remarks, see if you can transpose your thinking of your own dog (or someone else’s dog) into a human being. This is a fun exercise and just might open your mind and heart to the fact that, while dogs are like people, people are also like dogs.
I ran across “The 10 things your dog would tell you if they could talk” Not sure who to give credit to but saw this post by David Nurse. As you read this list, please think of a close friend, a business associate, a family member, an older person, or just someone you know and love in your dog’s place: (Remember; someone took your place long ago) Enjoy!
- My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful; Remember that before you get me.
- Give me time to understand what you want of me.
- Place your trust in me. It is crucial to my well-being.
- Do not be angry with me for long, and don’t lock me up as punishment.
- You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.
- Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice when you speak to me.
- Be aware of how you treat me. I will never forget.
- Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily hurt you. But I choose not to bite you because I love you.
- Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. I might not be getting the right food, or I have been out too long, or my heart is getting too old and weak.
- Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say; “I cannot bear to watch” or “Let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier for me if you are there, even in my death.
Want to build a better friendship? Get a dog or send this to someone you love. If you want to “play well with others,” don’t worry about being the “Alpha Dog.” Finally, how do you treat your dog? It might just mirror how you treat other people.
