As you have seen through my weekly “Elevator Guy” remarks, I have always been a HUGE list maker. Lots of things to do and people to serve. Once I complete a task, I quickly cross it off my list or store it away for future reference. However, some of those things I cross off, often continue to show up in my life which means I need to write it down again. Of course, we all know the definition of “insanity.” Doing things over and over the same way and expecting the same results.” Life can certainly be insane at times with the many commitments we have made. That is why it is important to learn to; “WRITE IT DOWN” and get your life in order. Try working daily on your “A” projects; working weekly on your “B” projects; and working monthly on those “C” or longer-term projects. But keep working. Circumstances might change along the way, but you will have a solid foundation on which to move forward.
The Elevator Guy would like to thank all of you for reading and sharing your enjoyment in how these weekly “Elevator Guy remarks” have made a difference in your lives and the lives of those you love. Many of you have shared these weekly remarks with others and for that I am truly grateful. You see, life is not about me. It is about YOU and your relationships to others. That is why I started these weekly remarks seven years ago in hopes of reaching more people. As we have said, relationships will make or break who we are as children of God, spouses, friends, brothers, sisters, parents.(and grandparents) So choose wisely, WHO you hang around and WHO you listen to, regardless of the season of your life. Be in awe of new relationships as they just might feed your soul at a time when you need it most.
I thought I would share an updated list of “Grandpa’s Ten Commandments” that I have shared over the years with my own children and grandchildren. Take a moment to reflect, renew, and rejoice in some of these principles that just might lead you to a better version of yourself. Here we go:
- Treat everyone as you would want to be treated: This means you show everyone respect in ANY situation. Expect to be treated the same way YOU treat other people.
- Mind your manners: You will be courteous to everyone you meet. Offer your hand when someone falls and your prayers when someone hurts. Think of others before yourself.
- Respect is earned: There will be times when you think you deserve a promotion, praise, or something better than another person simply because you have put in your time. Don’t fall for this. You earn respect from others when you show love, kindness, and humility.
- Take responsibility: You will mess up and make mistakes in life. A real man (or woman) will apologize when he/she is wrong and place blame on no one but him or herself. (Don’t forget to forgive and ask for forgiveness, which is free)
- Be humble: There will be times when you are right. Swallow your pride. It is more important to be silently recognized for what you’ve done in life. You are already loved by God and others so there is no reason to boast or show arrogance.
- Be honest and true to your word: Don’t lie. If you tell someone you will do something, DO IT! You will not be trusted if your word is broken.
- Work hard and be a role model for others: Help others. Lead the “100-0 rule” which means you will give 100% and expect nothing in return. Do not think of yourself but of others. Volunteer your time. Find places to give back and lend a hand without being asked. Stay late and arrive early.
- Smile: You never know what others are going through in life. Your smile may help strangers during one of the darkest times of their lives. Smile through your own pain. Laugh at yourself as a way to gain wisdom, clarity and understanding. It will help you through difficult moments.
- Love deeply: Love is such a beautiful gift and often so misunderstood. Please don’t waste it. Love freely. Find people in your life and show them more love than they expected.
- Put your faith first: You have heard me before about the importance of having a strong; Faith, Family, and Career (in that order) Remember; you will always be second. God is greater than all of us and that includes YOU. When you do this, everything else falls into place.
Make your own lists and live them out with a sense of fulfillment and joy. It will be one of the best things you can do for body, mind, and spirit. Remember; “Your Health is your Wealth.”
