MENTORING
Last week, we talked about “seven intangibles in life that cannot be bought” from Mitch Anthony’s book titled; “The New Retirementality.” (Thanks Brother Randy) As a summary, money cannot buy you; Happiness, Fulfillment, Balance, Satisfaction, Security, Significance and Success. Please reflect on whether you are searching for that pot of gold or winning the lottery in order to “THINK” it will make you happy, successful or more fulfilled. There are other more important things to search for in life, like Wisdom, Courage, Self-Mastery & Love; (even loving yourself in a healthy manner) or as Anthony points out with his coined phrase of “ROL” (Return on Life). Yes, ROI (return on investment) is important to have an “abundance mentality” at the end of your career vs. a “scarcity mentality.” However, if we choose to live in a scarcity mentality world, it may just lead us straight to defeat with worry, anxiety, depression and addictions. Not a pretty way to end your career. Choose to go out on top by doing your best and then being your best. To many of you, that means you had better find out WHO you are and WHY you are here. Anthony reminds us that retirement at a predetermined age is an outdated concept. The decision of when to retire should be based on inner desire. “Your work can and should be an expression of one’s soul and a means for making a meaningful contribution to the world we live in.” An individual’s aging process hinges on choices made regarding activity, involvement and attitude. (AIA) Anthony has developed a “Retirement Life Profile” which guides potential retirees on how to retire with purpose. They include many of the techniques and principles we are trying to share with our “younger,” foundational Band of Brothers, which includes:
- Visioning: (and being able to hold that vision)
- Balance: in having both vocation and vacation
- Work: in remaining plugged into meaningful pursuits to avoid falling into boredom and aimlessness
- Successful aging; which is continued growth and well-being in life.
Anthony reminds us, (at ANY age), but especially if you are already thinking about retirement, (don’t think about it too early in life) that we each need a “Retirementor.” I love that term which fits quite nicely into all of us needing that close friend or brother that can help us individually self-actualize in finding our own end-game in and for life.
Trying to keep these remarks a little less wordy today, but find myself reflecting on the important things in our lives, (like our Faith, Family and Careers) that I just don’t want people to go through life aimlessly or not listening to sound advice. “Don’t Do Life Alone.”
Here are six characteristics of healthy personalities Anthony shares, that might be something you can share with your own “Retirementor:”
- A positive concept of self.
- Seeing value in people as human beings.
- Enjoyment in helping others.
- A realistic perception of the world.
- A sense of humor.
- A unifying philosophy of life that defines purpose for living.
Do any of these resonate with you? If not, work on them one at a time until you feel you are getting closer to “Self-Mastery” of these characteristics. I guarantee you, it might take a lifetime but it may just show you the important things along your journey. Something great to look forward to.
