"Elevator Guy"
Growing up in Kearney, Nebraska during the fifties and sixties with two loving parents and three siblings, no more than two years apart, (I was number three) has certainly influenced who I am today. My parents taught us the importance of having a strong faith, the importance of family, and encouraged my siblings and I to work hard. This has been very influential in my writing as I focus on concepts covering faith, family and work.
All of the Nelsons were teachers and coaches, so after receiving my teaching and coaching degrees from Kearney State College, I set off for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to enter the corporate world of insurance. After a year on the east coast, I knew I belonged back home in the Midwest to raise a family. Now, 50 years later, I learned a lot about business, but I also learned a lot about myself and other people and want to share it with others. Galileo says, “You cannot teach a man anything. You can only help him find it within himself.”
As I began transitioning towards retirement, I wanted to reflect on how blessed I was in life. I decided to write down the many lessons I had learned over the years for my kids and grandkids. While doing so, I felt I could also leave a legacy to my UNICO associates and friends. So, in 2015, I began writing weekly messages under the self-inflicted title of “Chief Reminder Officer.” Once I fully
retired in 2018, I decided to change my title to “Elevator Guy.” This has allowed me to reach out to others to seek understanding and not judgment

"Coach Randy"

Growing up in Kearney, Nebraska being the youngest of four children was definitely a challenge, yet it was the best of times. This is where I learned the importance of faith, family, and work. Always competing with my brothers in everything from sports to music was an important part of developing our family dynamics. In fact, being actively involved in sports and music during high school and college helped influence my faith, and it gave me a platform to share my strong beliefs with others. This led me to a career in music and educational leadership.
While spending the past 45+ years as a teacher, principal, superintendent for K-12 grade education, and as a Director of Career Education at the College level, I have learned that one cannot be successful in any career if you don’t first have a solid faith and family life. While your job or career may define you as a person and absorb most of your time, you will never reach your full potential and purpose in life unless your priorities are in the right order: Faith, Family, and then your chosen career.
